PMI’s library of global standards is grouped into foundational standards, practice standards and frameworks, and standards extensions. These categories reflect the expansive nature of project management, and will continue to grow and evolve along with the profession.

Foundational Standards

These standards provide a foundation for project management knowledge and represent the four areas of the profession: project, program, portfolio and the organizational approach to project management. They are the foundation on which practice standards and industry-specific extensions are built.

Project Management Body of Knowledge

A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)—Fourth Edition

The PMBOK® Guide—Fourth Edition is the preeminent global standard for project management. Like previous editions, it represents generally recognized good practices in the profession while reflecting project management’s continually evolving knowledge.

First developed as a white paper in the 1983 PMI Ethics, Standards and Accreditation Report, the PMBOK® Guide has become the foremost global standard for the practice of project management.
